Atop the highest hill overlooking the park and with a tree line as a backdrop, the new Gloucester Township Veterans Memorial has seven flags that fly over a curved brick wall a few feet high and more than 20 feet long.

“This installment reinforces the pride that we have in Gloucester Township by honoring those who have served our country with honor and distinction,” township Mayor David Mayer said.

Adorning the wall are the emblems of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Their respective flags fly above them with the U.S. flag in the center. An eagle anchors the right side of the wall and on the left a symbol of sacrifice called the Fallen Soldier or Battlefield Cross — an empty helmet atop the stock end of a rifle whose barrel is pointing down inside a pair of combat boots.
